What is Bowen? The Bowen
Technique is a holistic, soft tissue ‘hands on – hands off’ therapy that works
well with the more traditional methods of treatment. The Bowen Technique
affects the body primarily through the nervous and the bio-energetic systems, to bring it into a state of balance.
How does it work? It works on the nervous system using
gentle yet powerful moves over muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia; the
impulses sent to the nervous system remind the body to regain normal movement
and initiate the healing process. The moves bring about incredible results by
penetrating to a deep cellular level, incorporating the body's unique ability
to heal itself. After all the body, knows how it should 'be' and how it should
'feel'.
A very
important aspect of the treatment is the short gaps between the series of
moves, when the practitioner will leave the room for a minute or two (the hands
off element). This allows the body, and the brain, the time and space it needs
to relax, assimilate, respond, and make its own adjustments. Change is not
forced upon the body; it is the client’s own body, which responds to the new
‘messages’ they are receiving.
Who can benefit? The therapy is so gentle that it can
treat anyone from babies to the elderly: treatments can be done through light
clothing or directly on the skin. The Bowen
Technique may very well be one of the single, most important tools we have to
facilitate healing of the whole body.
What conditions can benefit? There is a wide range of conditions
both acute and chronic where Bowen Therapy has provided either
long-term rapid remission or a significant improvement in presenting
problem and and general well being. Conditions that can respond well
include:
Acute/chronic pain with musculo-skeletal or neurological origins
fibromyalgia
back pain
lumbago
sciatica
chronic fatigue syndrome
neck pain
arm pain/carpal tunnel syndrome
TMJ syndrome
shoulder pain
leg/foot pain
emotional depression/stress
sporting and other trauma injuries.
One of the unique things about Bowen is in its
adaptability: it is excellent when used as stress management and for health
maintenance. It also enhances performance and reduces incidents of injury for
sports people.
How many will I need?Three or
four treatments spaced one week apart are all that is usually required.
However, chronic conditions may need longer. Your first treatment will include a full diagnosis which allows me to work out the best treatment plan for your needs. Follow-up maintenance sessions
every six weeks are recommended to keep the body in optimum condition.

Some of the things clients have said about Bowen
I am very pleased to write a letter recommending Rita Mikalauskas as a therapist & Bowen practitioner. I have recently been under extreme stress, & approached the suggestion of Bowen therapy with considerable scepticism.Rita is calm, professional, & most reassuring. She explained the procedure throughout, so that I felt total confidence in the technique, & was able to concentrate on releasing my tensions.During the sessions, my sense of time & place slowly dissolved, & by the end, I was experiencing the most profound state of relaxation I have ever known.I have found this a strengthening & enabling experience. I've been delighted to find that the enhanced sense of well being has stayed with me.I recommend Rita for her holistic approach. A.A.B
Following the treatment there was no pain in the neck & shoulder & I felt energised & well'
’What have you done to me, I’ve got no pain at all’.
'I'm sleeping really well, no headache at all now & back ache gone'.
'Sleeping really well, like a log & general feeling of being well. No back twinges in the past week' .
